What you’ll find inside
Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change, Fourth Edition by G. Roy Mayer, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff and Michele Wallace introduces applied behavior analysis through a practical, data-informed framework. The authors guide readers from defining a problem and setting measurable objectives to planning, monitoring and evaluating behavior-change programs. The fourth edition presents both foundational principles and examples for using them in education, clinical, organizational and other service settings.
Plan, measure and review change
The opening chapters explain applied behavior analysis and the role of the environment, then develop the building blocks of a change strategy. Topics include preparing supportive settings, refining goals, reinforcement, selecting reinforcers, collecting useful data, recording and graphing behavior, and examining whether an intervention is working. Later chapters address functional relationships, research designs, preventing unwanted behavior and choosing procedures to reduce behavior responsibly. The book’s chapter sequence emphasizes decisions that can be described, observed and reviewed rather than relying only on impressions.
For coursework and practice
Students in applied behavior analysis and related courses may use the text to connect basic principles with program design. Practitioners and supervisors may consult it when structuring objectives, organizing observations or evaluating progress with appropriate oversight. The publisher’s fourth-edition record references the BACB fifth-edition task list; readers preparing for a current certification exam should check the current examination outline and professional standards separately, since later versions may differ.

The most important introduction of Applied Behavior Analysis, the Science of change. It gives a overview of more than 2000 replicable behavior experiments and present those in a protocol format so that change agents can implement this technology as best as possible. This is not easy, but refreshing in comparison to the traditional indirect change methods.

I’m on about Chapter 8 of the ebook. Thus far the ebook is well written and contains excellent information -except for the chapter summaries. I find them a bit lazy and not always containing much information, and, at times, useless references to future chapters. “You’ll learn more about this in chapter 17,” or something like that. I don’t want to be told that…I just want a summary of the key points of the chapter, kind of like “Applied Behavior Analysis” by Cooper, Heron, and Hewerd does. When you’re someone who reads fast like me, you really need good chapter summaries. It helps rehash everything you’ve just learned.

Excellent daily reference and was essential in preparing for the BCABs. After working in the field for years I decided to work toward a new certification. I thought I knew everything, or almost everything- I was wrong! Of all the texts and reading required in my program, this was the most useful for passing with flying colors. I use it at least once a week for everything from making referrals to finding the best phraseology for reports. I skimmed some other reviews and just want to add that I love having a text I can physically hold with trusted sources rather than having to google and sort through the information I need to find reliable sites.
