What you’ll find inside
Botany: An Introduction to Plant Biology, Sixth Edition by James D. Mauseth introduces plant biology through the structures, processes, and relationships that shape plant life. This listing is for a PDF ebook. The book moves from fundamental plant organization through physiology, genetics, evolutionary history, and ecology, giving students a framework for studying plants at several scales.
Study plant form and function
The contents cover plant cells and growth, tissues, stems, leaves, roots, woody structure, flowers, and reproduction. Later sections connect photosynthesis and respiration with transport, soil and mineral nutrition, development, and the genetic basis of plant processes. The sequence helps readers see how specialized structures relate to the work a plant must carry out, from acquiring resources to growing, reproducing, and responding to its surroundings.
Connect diversity, evolution, and ecology
The sixth edition also introduces genetics, population change, classification, and the history of major plant groups. Topics progress through algae, nonvascular plants, seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms, and flowering plants, then widen to populations, communities, and biomes. A dedicated ethnobotany chapter brings people and plants into the discussion. Together, these subjects provide a route through plant diversity while linking botanical concepts to ecological patterns and human uses.

David Mason –
This ebook is the standard text for many Botany courses at university. It is seven hundred pages of meticulous detail that covers everything you could possibly need in an introduction to the subject. The illustrations are particularly helpful. Every chapter follows the same format which is both good for student familiarity but perhaps not ideal for every topic. There are many boxed topics that deal with subsidiary topics. These occasionally break up the flow of the text and some of the illustrations are oddly placed. The text is for an American audience and for non-Americans some of the topics seem a bit odd, e.g. they felt the need to include a gentle debunking of Creationism, repeated assertions about evolution, and a guide to the metric system. However, these are minor criticisms. The text is comprehensive, clearly stated and lavishly illustrated. It also comes with a password to further online resources. Overall it would be hard to name a better introductory text.

John R. Meyers –
Amazing ebook. I thought I was buying a standard (aka, dull but thorough) text on a subject new to me; to my great surprise the ebook is wonderfully and entertainingly written, and brings botany to life. the author shows what real scientific thinking is: inquisitive, integrative, and fun. Expansive rather than narrow. Aided by math, physics and chemistry but not drowned by them.

Graham Cammock –
This ebook is amazing, it is unbelievable how much is known about plants and flowers. I’m not a student, just an enthusiast, but this ebook took my knowledge and ability up a level from wild flower identification and using wild flower keys. The most important ebook I’ve read in my life, because it is life changing. If you’re a hobbyist botanist like me, I definitely recommend reading this ebook and getting the ‘Plantsnap’ app on your smart phone.

Great college level text. Far superior than the college course text I had in college years ago.

Excellent botany textbook with all the latest research and facts on current thinking on plant biology. It also has plenty of beautiful color photos of cell structure, plants, algae and everything related to the physiology of plants.
