Brogdon’s Forensic Radiology, Second Edition, edited by Michael J. Thali, Mark D. Viner, and B. G. Brogdon, examines how radiographic and cross-sectional imaging can support forensic investigation. This listing is for an Ebook-PDF edition. Its contents combine foundational material with applications in identification, mass-casualty work, injury analysis, court testimony, and investigations involving both biological and non-biological evidence.

Imaging in forensic identification

Early chapters define the field, trace its development, and explain its scope. The text then turns to identification of the dead, anthropological parameters, cross-sectional imaging, and dental identification. These topics show how radiographs and CT images can contribute information about remains and how imaging may be used as part of a broader identification process. A separate section considers the radiologist’s role as an expert and the way imaging evidence is presented in legal settings.

Investigative applications and case contexts

Later chapters address imaging in mass-casualty situations, gunshot wounds, and forms of abuse. The contents also include body packing and smuggling, larceny, and radiology used to examine art and other objects. The second edition adds material on large-scale investigations, virtual autopsy methods, dental imaging, portable x-ray, computerized image handling, and related developments. This breadth makes the book a reference for readers comparing techniques and considering how radiological findings fit within forensic practice.

The Bible of forensic radiology. Pity it does not include anything about aviation disaster forensics at all. Overall a great ebook.

This ebook has everything a general radiologist or technician needs to have an idea about forensic imaging and the current uses of it. Paper quality is a bit less than your average radiology textbook (i.e. not glossy expensive paper) but pictures are well chosen and have good quality. Most of the ebook is centered on X rays, with a chapter about virtual imaging that includes information about postmortem CT and MRI (most of its content is akin to what you can find in The Virtopsy Approach, since author/editor worked on both ebooks). There’s a chapter about equipment and radiation protection as well as on radiographic positioning that seems redundant since it can be found in almost every radiology ebook, so they seem like fillers, in my opinion. For a subject so interesting you would expect the authors to write about it and not about what’s considered basic in radiology. I wish the 3D scanning or even the chapter about imaging of mummies and antiques were longer. Overall, it’s a good buy if you are a general radiologist or resident who intends to become familiar with basic concepts and current use of techniques, especially since we don’t get a specific training on forensic imaging and, as you’ll read, forensic radiology is not the same as clinical radiology.
