Building Codes Illustrated: A Guide to Understanding the 2018 International Building Code, Sixth Edition by Francis D. K. Ching and Steven R. Winkel pairs explanations with architectural illustrations to help readers navigate the 2018 International Building Code. This listing is for an ePDF edition. The chapter sequence moves from code navigation and occupancy classifications into construction, life-safety provisions, building systems, and structural requirements.

Navigate code requirements by topic

The contents begin with how the code is organized, then address use and occupancy, special detailed requirements, building height and area, and types of construction. Later chapters cover fire-resistive construction, interior finishes, fire-protection systems, means of egress, accessibility, interior environmental provisions, and energy efficiency. This arrangement gives readers a way to locate related requirements and understand how code topics connect across a building design. It also helps readers move from a requirement’s place in the code to the building feature the requirement addresses, supporting a clearer study path across related chapters.

Connect diagrams with building systems

Subsequent sections turn to exterior walls, roof assemblies, structural provisions, special inspections and tests, soils and foundations, and building materials and systems. The illustrated format helps readers relate code language to assemblies and spatial conditions. The authors stress that code interpretations and examples require project-specific analysis and review by the authority having jurisdiction; the book is a study and reference guide, not a determination for a particular project.

Check the exact digital edition

ISBN 9781119485049 identifies the ePDF edition; paperback and EPUB editions have separate ISBNs. This distinguishes the supplied PDF from other formats within the same sixth-edition title. Akshay Korlekar –

This is an amazing ebook that makes learning codes so easy. Hats off to Francis Ching for such innovative diagrams to explain a topic as convoluted as Building codes. Though it wont cover each and every Section and sub section , it helps one get tuned into the Code. A suggestion is to keep a copy of IBC alongside.

  2. D

    Doug Overbo –

    Great illustrations of Code requirements

  3. S

    Steve Picchi –

This ebook is an absolutely must have reference ebook if you are a commercial or residential builder/draft person. And should be used in conjunction with the IBC ebooks. If you are taking a state contractors exam. I would wholeheartedly recommend the IBC ebook over this ebook. This ebook does not cover every aspect of the IBC and will sometimes refer you back to the IBC ebook. I purchased this ebook for the VA home improvement exam and had a few questions that were not covered in this manual. However, I am still very happy with this purchase.

  4. W

    Will Ready –

I bought this to study for the ARE with, and it is great for that, but I will benefit from this study for years to come. As a young architect without a lot of guidance in how code works or why it is written the way it is, this ebook has established a stronger foundation for me in applying the IBC. I have some experience applying code, but it often felt like stabbing in the dark since I’m fairly inexperienced. Though not a replacement for experience, it will help you get started on the right foot. I’d recommend this ebook to all young architects coming out of school.

  5. L

    Leticia Colnago –

I love the Ching ebooks for their illustrations, makes it so much easier to understand the concepts (especially compared to usually unintelligible stuff that’s in code ebooks).

  6. A

    A. Hall –

A great, updated resource for visual learners trying to understand mundane building codes.

Necessary for every office or individual. Not just for those starting out on their architecture journey – extremely helpful in understanding the basics.
