Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 9th Edition by James Stewart, Daniel K. Clegg and Saleem Watson is an upper-level mathematics textbook organized for a multi-course calculus sequence. The title page and Cengage record identify this specific edition; check that “9th Edition” matches your syllabus before choosing the file.

What does the ninth edition cover?

The opening chapters develop functions and models, limits, derivatives and differentiation rules, then use derivatives to study rates of change and optimization. The next section moves into definite and indefinite integrals, applications of integration, and methods for evaluating integrals. Together these chapters connect the central ideas of single-variable calculus with worked mathematical reasoning and practice topics.

Later material broadens the sequence to differential equations, parametric equations and polar coordinates. The contents then turn to sequences and power series, vectors and geometry in space, vector-valued functions and partial derivatives. Multiple integrals and vector calculus extend the discussion to functions and fields in several dimensions, while the final chapter addresses second-order differential equations. This progression makes the volume relevant to students checking a course that extends beyond introductory differential and integral calculus.

For the price, it’s excellent. If you want an ebook that won’t break the bank, this one’s the way to go. On the other hand, some of the problems actually differ from the original edition. So far, I’ve only encountered one or two problems that were different, but I have only been through two chapters, and we don’t get assigned every problem in the chapter. Just the ones the professor likes. So if he assigns like 35% of the actual amount of problems and (that I know of) i’ve encountered two. So there’s probably a hand-full of different problems per section. Ultimately, it just depends on how much your willing to compensate your grade for the price.

Best ebook for beginners in calculus but it’s requires algebra knowledge.

  3. A

Good but not that good . It inly covers topics from over the top. No in depth knowledge whatsoever

  4. K

After Chapter 2.3, I never saw a problem that was different from the standard edition.

I like the odds in the back. However, since it is an international version, the units are metric. A significant amount of problems are different from the US units text. If your prof is a stickler for homework and such, don’t buy this as a cheaper version of the US one–you will screw yourself over.
