What you’ll find inside
Advanced Assessment: Interpreting Findings and Formulating Differential Diagnoses, Fourth Edition, edited by Mary Jo Goolsby and Laurie Grubbs, is a clinical assessment reference for readers learning to interpret findings and organize a differential diagnosis. The book is designed for advanced health assessment coursework and for advanced-practice clinicians who need a structured way to revisit unfamiliar patient presentations. Its fourth edition covers symptoms and conditions across the lifespan.
How the book organizes assessment
The first part introduces clinical assessment and decision-making, including genomic assessment. The main section then moves through body regions and systems, from skin, head and eyes to cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, neurological and mental-health concerns. Chapters use a complaint-focused structure: a reader can start with the patient’s presenting concern, review the focused assessment, and compare findings that may support different conditions. The publisher’s bibliographic description reports coverage of about 170 symptoms and conditions across the lifespan.
Coverage across patient groups
The final part considers assessment and differential diagnosis for pediatric patients, pregnant patients, transgender and gender-diverse adults, older adults, and people with disabilities. This population-focused material complements the system chapters and helps readers consider how age, pregnancy, gender-related care and disability can affect an assessment. The book is an educational reference; clinical decisions should still be made using current evidence, professional standards and the circumstances of each patient.
Who may find it useful?
Graduate nursing students can use the book alongside an advanced assessment course, while new and experienced practitioners can consult it when reviewing a symptom-based approach. The system-by-system structure also makes it easier to return to a particular area without reading the book in sequence.

NP student here. RN for over 12 years. I don’t know everything but I did not find this ebook to be a thorough reference ebook. It has many diagnoses and disease processes. The information os quick and to the point. You will have to have a diagnosis in mind already. It doesn’t list differentials near your diagnosis. It lists differential in the front of the chanpter. (still trying to learn to utilize the infomation quickly in clinical.) Not working. It has full color derm photos (not a huge selection). The photos are smaller but, convey the information clearly. It does not include treatment. At All. It has a minimal amount of differentials. I’m not looking for zebras, but if you have any nursing experience or are past your pathophysiology class in NP school you will be able to come up with most of the differentials they list on your own. I was hoping for more help as i hone my SOAP note skills. This ebook disappointed me. I have a larger heavier ebook I was hoping not to have to reference. But I will continue to use that other one. No labs or imaging to learn from. I will speak to the quality of the paper and printing. It is colorful. The paper is a proper heaviness to be durable. So far still looking to find a way to attach my smart phone to me. I’d rather drop my phone, break it and buy an overpriced smart phone than purchase this ebook.

This is required reading for my class and it’s helpful. It would have been extremely helpful if it had sample SOAP notes to go with each section.
