What you’ll find inside
Applied Behavior Analysis, Third Edition, by John O. Cooper, Timothy E. Heron, and William L. Heward, introduces the concepts and methods used to define, measure, and analyze behavior and evaluate behavior change. The book moves from core principles into measurement, research design, intervention procedures, functional assessment, and professional ethics. It is a course text for readers building a systematic foundation in applied behavior analysis.
What core concepts does the textbook cover?
The opening sections explain the defining characteristics of applied behavior analysis and its basic principles. Later parts examine reinforcement and punishment, motivating operations, stimulus control, verbal behavior, and procedures for developing new behavior, including shaping and chaining. The structure allows readers to study a principle and then connect it to the methods used to observe and assess behavior in applied settings.
How does it teach measurement and behavior-change research?
Dedicated sections cover target behavior selection, measurement, measurement quality, and the graphic display and interpretation of data. The text also discusses single-case research designs such as reversal, multielement, multiple-baseline, and changing-criterion approaches. These chapters help students understand how behavior analysts evaluate whether a change follows an intervention, rather than relying only on informal observation.
Which intervention and professional topics are included?
Further chapters cover functional behavior assessment, antecedent interventions, differential reinforcement, extinction, token economies, self-management, generalization, and maintenance. Pearson identifies new material on equivalence-based instruction and emergent learning in this edition. A final section addresses ethical and professional responsibilities. Learners should use these topics with appropriate supervision and current professional standards; reading a textbook alone does not qualify anyone to provide behavioral services.

I learned from an overseas BCBA that this is a low-cost version of the “White Ebook 3rd Edition,” which is only available up to the 2nd edition in Japanese. The fact that it is a low-cost version and no longer “white” will not be a problem. My English is not good enough to read all of it, but the Kindle version makes it easy to search. I use it to reference content that is not on the second edition.
