What you’ll find inside
Applied Pathophysiology for the Advanced Practice Nurse, First Edition, by Lucie Dlugasch and Lachel Story, examines how changes in body function appear as signs and symptoms in patients. Its advanced-practice nursing focus links cellular and system-level processes with common health alterations, giving students a framework for understanding why conditions produce particular clinical findings and how diagnostic reasoning develops.
What body systems and conditions does the book cover?
The contents progress from cellular function, immunity, and hematopoietic function through cardiovascular, pulmonary, fluid and electrolyte, urinary, reproductive, and gastrointestinal topics. Later chapters address endocrine, neural, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and sensory function. Each system section considers normal function and then conditions that disrupt it, allowing readers to compare how different disorders can present with overlapping symptoms.
How does the book support clinical reasoning?
The publisher describes the text as a bridge between prior nursing experience and advanced practice. Its approach groups disorders with similar presentations, encourages comparison of possible diagnoses, and discusses the reasoning behind common diagnostic tests. Case-based examples are intended to help students connect patient findings with potential health alterations and management considerations. The book supports learning and should be used with current guidelines, supervision, and up-to-date clinical references.
Who is this advanced-practice nursing textbook for?
The first edition is aimed at students preparing for advanced practice registered nursing roles and courses in pathophysiology. It can help organize study around both the underlying physiology and the clinical patterns associated with disorders. The publisher notes coverage across the lifespan, including pediatric, maternal, adult, and older-adult contexts, as well as cultural and gender variations in disease presentation.

Has some decent explanations, but is definitely American based so confusing when you have different lab values/measurements in Canada. Has critical thinking questions and case studies, but does jot supply the answers to help you know if your answer is correct. Would recommend reading the year before you take your Patho course because it’s waaaaay too much to absorb and recall during the semester.

It serves a purpose as a required material for my daughters schooling and she is super smart, working on a PHD in nursing, so I guess it works.
