Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th Edition is James Stewart’s calculus text for students following a broad, multi-course sequence. The supplied title and copyright pages identify the 2016 eighth edition. Because several versions of Stewart’s calculus texts share similar names, compare the title, author and edition number with your course reading list.
Follow the sequence from functions to vector calculus
The contents begin with functions and mathematical models, limits and derivatives, then build through differentiation rules and applications. Integral calculus follows, including areas, volumes and other applications, before the book introduces integration techniques and further uses of integrals. The sequence gives readers a way to locate core single-variable material by chapter when planning a course or reviewing a topic.
The later chapters broaden the scope to differential equations, parametric curves and polar coordinates, sequences and series, vectors and geometry in space, vector functions, partial derivatives, multiple integrals and vector calculus. The appendices include background and reference material such as coordinate geometry, trigonometry, sigma notation and theorem proofs. Check the detailed contents against the topics selected by your instructor; not every class covers every chapter in one term.

This is the eighth edition, so a course requiring the ninth edition or another calculus title may use a different chapter arrangement or examples. Cengage’s current catalog distinguishes the hardback and loose-leaf ISBNs from the eBook access ISBN. Confirm any assigned WebAssign or other online component separately, since access products and downloadable book files are not interchangeable.

Didn’t find it very useful for my calc course. Ended up using YouTube videos to learn since this wasn’t effective

A very useful textbook, will make studying calculus less stressful and more enjoyable. Would recommend
Justin Bernal –
The holy bible of calculus ebooks. Covers everything you would need from Calculus I-III. Definitely a good supplement to the textbook the instructor uses.

Ebook is fine. Come with Mastering. Requried for 2nd year Eng Math.

As a person attempting to self-study calculus I found worked solutions to be helpful towards understanding. Sometimes can be a little vague though, however there are many Youtube videos on just about every topic in the ebook as it is quite popular.

The ebook is okay. The problems are good overall, but I got confused at the last chapter (vector calculus dealing with Greene’s theorem) due to vague definition explanations. Calculus ebooks should be teaching real analysis alongside calculus, so that students can jump right into complex analysis having a solid grasp on all topics of calculus.
