Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 15th Edition by Michael R. Lindeburg, PE is a broad civil engineering review manual. The supplied title page identifies the fifteenth edition; the publisher lists this edition as a 2015 publication. Because exam specifications and engineering codes change, compare this edition with your current review course and the latest exam outline before choosing it.

Review across civil engineering disciplines

The manual’s contents group material into background and support, water resources, environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, construction, and systems, management and professional topics. Reference sections provide equations, conversion factors, design information and appendices that readers can use while reviewing the breadth of civil engineering concepts. The organization makes it possible to move between foundational calculations and discipline-specific areas without treating any single chapter as a substitute for a full study plan.

PPI’s current PE Civil guidance distinguishes preparation materials from the computer-based exam itself: candidates use a digital NCEES reference handbook during testing. This older printed-reference edition is therefore a study aid, not a promise that it reflects current exam coverage or a book that can be brought into the exam. Check current NCEES specifications, code editions and state-board rules, then use practice questions to identify what you need to review.

Absolutely indispensable for PE prep. I use this more than any other reference. This is the first ebook I look to for any references. with a little tabbing and a lot of time digging through it, nearly all the information you need is in there.

  2. E

    E. Shaughnessy –

Well I passed. Don’t read the ebook. Take a bunch of practice tests and then tab out the ebook from those questions. Also tab the ebook from the PE outline for whatever test you’re taking. I put the ebook on my shelf in my office. I think it makes me look smart.

I didn’t study with the CERM but I used it as a back-up reference. In fact I didn’t even tab it since it was just a back-up just in case I couldn’t find something in my main reference document. I highly recommend it because it saved me on some questions.

You are lucky to buy this before you graduated since it contains chapters to every topic for civil engineers: anything from Laplace transformations to Reynold’s tables. Absolutely required for studying the PE exam as it gives enough info to answer almost every question. Editions don’t change too much aside from reaaranged chapters/appx, can use 3-4 editions older without problems. Useful enough to be your main go-to for work, school or generally taking notes.

  5. L

    Lisa –

Stop wasting time and get this ebook before you study. It is what you will use on the PE test. You need to be familiar with it and tab the important sections. It is very well organized and the index is priceless. I’d recommend getting the index in a separate 3-ring binder. As a water-resources depth taker, I probably did NOT need the latest version. The math is the same and there are no real “codes” to update for that section. I used this ebook exclusively, with additional review course notes, and one wastewater ebook from college.

    Brian –

Exactly what I was looking for. Good quality ebook. Also a critical resource for anyone taking the PE exam. The help was an essential aid that help me pass the exam on the first go.
