Abnormal Psychology, Eighth Edition by Susan Nolen-Hoeksema is a textbook for readers studying psychological disorders, how they are investigated and the different ways they are understood. The supplied file’s title and copyright pages identify this edition. This listing is distinct from other books with the same general title: it follows Nolen-Hoeksema’s chapter structure, including separate attention to research, assessment, treatment and the experiences of people living with mental health conditions.

What this edition covers

The opening chapters introduce abnormality, theories and treatment before turning to clinical assessment, diagnosis and research methods. The main subject areas include trauma and stress-related concerns, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, somatic and dissociative disorders, mood disorders and suicide, schizophrenia-spectrum conditions, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive disorders, eating disorders and substance use. Additional chapters connect psychological health to physical health, sexuality and other social issues. The eighth edition’s contents make it possible to follow a concept from definitions and explanatory models through research and the questions involved in assessment or treatment.

That structure can help students organize class notes around both the categories of disorders and the broader ideas used to study them. Readers can compare explanatory perspectives, distinguish assessment from diagnosis, and use chapter summaries and key terms when planning revision. The material is educational; it is not a diagnostic instrument or a replacement for professional mental-health assessment. The edition was published in 2020, so readers should follow their instructor’s selected edition and consult current professional guidance for present-day practice.
