What you’ll find inside
Basic Biostatistics: Statistics for Public Health Practice, Second Edition by B. Burt Gerstman is an introductory text on statistical methods used with public-health and biomedical data. Jones & Bartlett Learning describes the book as balancing exploratory and confirmatory approaches, with illustrative examples that introduce common forms of analysis. Its structure is intended to make core ideas approachable to readers who have a modest mathematical background while still showing how methods connect to practical questions.
From data exploration to inference
The publisher groups the material into three parts: basic concepts and techniques, analysis of quantitative response variables, and analysis of categorical responses. Across those parts, the book covers sampling, exploratory data analysis, estimation, hypothesis testing, and the ideas of statistical power and precision. The contents also identify topics such as probability distributions, confidence intervals, comparisons of means and proportions, correlation, regression, and cross-tabulated data. Together, these subjects provide a route from describing a dataset to asking what conclusions the data may support.
Who may find it useful?
Undergraduate and graduate students in public health, epidemiology and related biomedical fields may use the text as a course companion. The examples can help readers connect statistical vocabulary with the kinds of measurements and study questions that arise in health research. The book also gives instructors flexibility to select topics in a different order, as the publisher notes that chapters are intentionally concise. It is a learning resource, not a substitute for statistical consultation or careful study design.

The chapters in the ebook are organized well topically and builds sequentially and the quality departs from there. 1. Each chapter has copious examples however, key steps are missing and shortcuts are taken, which made some of the problems difficult to complete on your own. 2. Every chapter concluded with about 20 problems for students to complete for practice on their own. However, the back of the textbook only listed solutions to the even numbered problems. I have no idea why the publisher would do this? Perhaps to leave items without answers so that some selected questions could be used for graded homework? They didn’t feel like creating an instructors manual? 3. In my person opinion this textbook lacked theory *not enough written explanation. There were so many stat examples but it lacked in theory. As an educator I was able to follow the logic but the students taking the class with me were absolutely lost. The theory is more relevant anyway because most of the stats are available as SPSS functions. I bought this ebook as the recommended textbook for my MS in Clinical Research. My main focus then was to understand the concepts and be able to perform these statistical operations using SPSS. This ebook is nothing short of great for someone like me. Would recommend.

I used this textbook to supplement my statistics lectures. It really helped clarify my professor’s points and laid information out in an understandable way.

I would’ve liked more detail And explanations pertaining to some of the statistical tests, but the answers to the odd numbered problems in the back were useful.
